A new variant has dealt with the death of the HD-DVD. According to Warner, Best Buy, Walmart, Netflix and jumped on the bandwagon Blu, the fate of the HD-DVD was already sealed.
Despite the gloomy news, the main HD-DVD developer Toshiba Corporation, initially refused to comment on his plans for HD-DVD. However, as many analysts predicted, Toshiba came out last week and officially waived on Blu-ray.
Many saw Toshiba’s willingness to give on HD-DVD as a logical business decision, and perhaps an admission by the Blu-ray superiority. However, it is possible that a little more on the story. Reuters reported that on Wednesday, Toshiba and Sony Corporation, one of the Blu-ray developers importantly, agreed to a big business, reached shortly after Toshiba has its final decision HD-DVD.
Sony agreed to sell microchip manufacturing plants in the western Japan for about $ 835M USD. These plants currently produce RSX Cell processors and graphics chips. Toshiba is in the joint venture with Sony on 1 April 2008.
Toshiba, Sony and IBM were the major developers of the Cell microprocessor, but Toshiba previously showed little interest in using the chip for their own projects. Sony advertises the Cell Broadband Engine in the PlayStation 3 console, IBM uses the Cell processor and high-performance computing clusters. Toshiba has vowed to now with the Cell in its coming products.
While Toshiba and Sony in talks in October 2007 and reached a preliminary agreement on the sale of the cell, the two companies continue to haggle over the price. Sony concession of the things as cheap for Toshiba will probably strike many of the following drop to Toshiba’s HD-DVD more than a coincidence, and perhaps a sign of an informal agreement.
The other interesting aspect of the movement is that there is a clear shift from Toshiba on the PS3. The PS3, which last month sold out Microsoft’s Xbox 360, which previously had few connections to the company, while Microsoft is the number one in the hardware manufacturing has always been allies Toshiba. Toshiba manufacturers several components for the Xbox 360, the HD-DVD add-on, and the Microsoft Zune MP3 player.
Toshiba’s flip-flop in May were in the cards for a while. Microsoft showed little remose than HD-DVD took second place to Blu-ray, a Toshiba move must be recognised by its American allies. Now is the condensed PS3 venture between Sony and Toshiba Toshiba indicates that now backing the PS3 almost exclusively, another victory for Sony.
